Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Greetings Sim League. I'm 25 years old and living in Chicago. My place is pretty close to Wrigley if you know how to drive. I went to KU for undergrad, then spent a year at ND before starting work. I work in Accounting. Life is pretty good right now. Plenty to do in Chicago. Although Winter is Coming which I'm not looking forward to. blah blah blah
It seams like you have been in the league forever, do you remember what/who brought you into the league?
I used to be a regular in the NBA thread on TMB. Canes mentioned the sim league, and I PMed him that I was interested. I think that was 3 irl years ago which is pretty wild. I liked the league almost immediately, this is right up my alley.
But yeah, blame Canes for bringing me here.
You are very succesful at the sim league, you always put together competitive teams and you have a strong grasp of what to look for in your team. Any secrets you are willing to share in what you look for in building your team?
Biggest piece of advice is that you need to pay attention to everybody else's team so you can identify when there are good players ripe for the picking. Pay attention to when somebody has a cap crunch coming or is thinking about starting a tank. That's the easiest way to land good players. Also need to learn how to manage bird years and make good offers in Free Agency.
Mistakes to avoid:
1. Don't get too attached to the players you draft. They aren't all destined to become good, even if they are lotto.
2. Don't get hung up on trading back for your pick if you're moving on from a core. Trading for proven young talent > trading for draft picks
Congratulations on your recent championship, Is this the most rewarding or do you have another championship/team that you feel is more rewarding?
I think this was at best the 4th best team I ever had. I was very surprised that this team broke through given what I had at PG. Although it seems like Holzman is a playoff beast which helped me get through Ackles and Larry Johnson. I did really enjoy that it was Knicks - Suns finals. #Spreadsheet.
My best teams by far were those first couple years I had Oscar and Bossert paired up. I think it was my 3018 team that had the highest point differential in history. Playoffs are pretty random though. I guess I can't complain after my recent title which definitely had some randomness to it.
We have all had players that we though were sure things that turn into flops and players we took flyers on that turned out to be studs. What are your top 5 and bottom 5 draft picks of all time?
Best Draft Picks:
1. Jon Pierce - Far and away my best pick. Last pick in the draft and the guy might be a HOFer. Thank you Odin. As I remember it he was +2 on the guy who got picked 1st overall.
2. Steve Nash - Another good value pick. I think Nash was an extremely good PG. Always confused me when he sat on the bench later in his career.
To be honest I haven't really had a whole lot of luck in the draft in 4.0. I basically have had two good picks. I guess I could say Anthony Jones but he's just decent. I guess Larry Johnson was drafted with a Suns pick too.
Bad Draft Picks:
1. Sam Bowie - Left so many dead and injured in his wake. Busting wasn't enough for him. He had to put me on tilt to do a god awful trade. Which then led to the E-Bullying…
2. Justice Winslow, Joshua Smith, Dez Wells - So these are the 3 Bozos I drafted in that unbelievably stacked 3013 Draft. I drafted Winslow instead of Georges Niang. And then Smith/Wells instead of the Harrison Twins.
3. Earl Manigault - Debated putting him as a best draft pick since he was at the heart of the Westphal deal.
4. Shaun Livingston*- I didn't draft Livingston, but he might be my biggest "bust" in Sim League. I had such high hopes for him and he started so promising. But he just kind of flat-lined after I re-signed him long term. Odin later said he was supposed to be Magic-lite or something, pouring more salt in the wound.
5. Ryan Pope - Back in 3005 I was debating between Ryan Pope and Stanley Robinson for my 2nd round pick. I chose poorly.
I probably wouldn't have extended him though.
You are a master at constructing your roster, what is the best trade you have made in the league?
I've had a couple trades that were pretty lopsided like Westphal and Payton deals. Favorite trade might be the Bossert deal between Jerry and I. That's the only Superstar trade I can recall where it really worked out for both sides right away. Nice Win-Win deal that was a good negotiation. Oscar deal was kind of the same way, I had to go around and gather Bruns' picks, but it finally worked out, and I thought I had just put together a Dynasty team.
I also really enjoyed the crazy string of trades I made that ended with me getting Cliff Robinson and picks. Think it was like the 3013 offseason.
Are there any GMs that you avoid discussing trade with and why?
Bankz and I have declared a trade embargo for the sake of our E-Relationship. Other than that, no. I'll trade with anyone. It's weird to me when people let who they are trading with effect the deal. I try not to think like that.
Can you give me your all time starting 5 in sim league?
All time TMBSL
Magic - Thompson is more accomplished, but I got to go with the
Bossert - Just a monster
Godbolt - More
Shareef - Best PF ever imo.
Catfish - The ultimate no-shoot big
If I was building a team a perfect team, that's what it would be.
All time Suns
Oscar - Obvious
Bossert -Obvious
Holzman - Might be a surprise pick, but I love the guy. Plus
Cliff - Stud
JO - Stud
What are your top 5 drinks of choice?
1. My liquor of choice is Vodka. So let's go Vodka-Tonic at 1.
2. Rum Punch - Never had a bad one
3. Hoegaarden - I fully admit I'm not nearly as well versed in beer as some on this board. But I've always liked this one.
4. Mallorts - Taste like Oscar Game 7s
5. Rice Wine - Ian will understand this.
In the recent podcast, you recieved a lot of hate from dumptime. Any response to him about his level of hate?
I pay as much attention to dump as I do the crazy homeless people that hang outside 7/11.
I think he's the first adult I've ever encountered who isn't qualified to be a greeter at Walmart.
The board has been a little star wars crazy since the new movie came out, lets say that all the actors from the movies had to be replaced by sim league GM's, who would you cast in what roles and why?
Kylo Ren - Odin because they could save money by not needing to modulate his voice. Odin also gets pretty moody.
Finn - Ayyoe
Han Solo - SPL because we need someone with greying hair
Chewbacca - Buster is a master of nonverbal communication. We might end up with an NC-17 rating though.
Poe Dameron - Pete. Anti-Defamation League didn't really give me a choice here.
Rey - Yawn because he'll nail the hallucination scene. It'll be like he's not even acting.
Leia - Canes. I just think he'd look good with the hairstyle.
Jar Jar Binks - Taco Taco Binks
Luke Skywalker - 2Poor fits the bill. Former champion who disappeared after his life fell apart.
BB-8 - Bruns always has a lighter ready.
If you could punch one GM in the face, who would it be and why?
He knows who he is. And he knows why.
