I tallied up all the cuts (including second rounders and trades) of the past ten years, then looked out how many Win Shares they have generated since being cut. Obviously Champ Godbolt is the best player to ever be cut at any point in his career, but he played approximately 12 seconds after MistleTacoe cut him so that's not very interesting. Out of a total of 210 players cut there were only 5 to amass 5+ WS after being cut, and here is the lineup in order of least good to most good:
Jay Vincent 7 Win Shares, .102 WS/48
Power Forward
After a pretty poor rookie season with C potential, cut by @dumptime in order to make room for all the prospects Mad King sent him for Wes Matthews.
Got a cup of coffee with the Nets, who beat the Grizzlies to the punch by two minutes.
Signed by Mad King to the MLE, later traded to the Nets in (one of) the Catfish trade(s).
Looked a lot better with the Nets and had B potential so Druce signed him to a 5 year $30m deal.
And immediately regretted that decision, buying him out later that same season.
And with that he was gone.
Patrick Douglas 23 Win Shares so far, .086 WS/48
Shooting Guard
Continues the trend of All-Cut players with two first names.
Bounced to five different teams his first five years, but was cut only by Trofie in the JO trade.
Failed to live up to his sterling scoring grades in Boston and Denver.
Rewarded by dilworth with a 3 year $30m deal and continued to not score at an A-/A- level.
Sent to the Warriors in the Stanley Johnson trade. (Won't be the last time you hear that name.)
Finally put up decent efficiency in extremely limited contract year minutes.
Snapped up on the LLE by Majic , scored even more efficiently, earning himself a whopping 3 year $5.2m deal.
Still isn't living up to his grades but 20 PPG on slightly above average efficiency isn't bad.
Dana Barros 15 Win Shares so far, .125 WS/48
Point Guard
Started his career as a typical CBCB prospect with mediocre production to match.
Traded twice before playing a single game.
Exploded to A- outside A- handling his second year, looked very solid on the court.
So @dumptime let dilworth steal him on the LLE.
Traded by the Rockets to Trofie for JR Smith.
Saw his brother Cody Barros signed and traded by Trofie right back to the Rockets for Claude Gregory.
Cut by Trofie in the trade that sent that Claude to the Nuggets for William J. Donovan.
Has been on at least seven other rosters so far.
Has yet to be on a multi year deal since his draft contract.
Keeps gettin' dem checks.
Josh Smith 22 Win Shares, .121 WS/48
Center
I've already been over a lot of his history in his (ongoing) Hall of Fame campaign, so briefly:
Was on 11 different franchises before establishing himself in New York as...
Without question the greatest defensive small forward in the history of TMBSL.
Seriously, don't even bring that weak stuff in here.
Went to three straight All-Defensive First Teams starting the year after being cut by Odin .
Was so incensed by the cut that he even came out of retirement to make a fourth straight All-D.
Pete Holzman 40 Win Shares so far, .145 WS/48
Small Forward
The only free second round draft pick cut in this list, and the only such cut to generate even one Win Share.
Cut by KwYawnza only to go from C to C+ outside, B- to A- defense, and D to B potential in TC.
Was the 16th post-TC signing by Face-in (who also signed Josh Smith) and played a total of 207 minutes.
Next year was the 4th post-TC signing by victorj24 (after ANK1990 signed Patrick Douglas)
Despite playing 0 minutes all year, made the All-Rookie game as a Sophomore.
Signed by dilworth on a day 5 MLE and looked good in a super sub role.
Lasted until day 4 the next year, signed by dilworth to $5.2m and traded to the Warriors for Stanley Johnson.
Looked a lot worse in less PT, lasted until day 5 where he was signed by ANK1990 for $590,850
Was still trash, lasted until day 5 where he again signed with the Suns for $1.3m over 2 years
His first multi year contract since the draft.
Blew up as a starter in the second year, forcing a 7 year near-max from ANK1990 ...
...but rewarded his GM with an All-NBA Third Team and championship.
Ladies and gentlemen, your All-Cut Team Captain.
.
It looks bad at first glance that Trofie has two of the five All-Cut players, but he and Odin also have by a wide margin the most cuts at 20 and 18 respectively, so it stands to reason they'd also be over-represented in any subset of cut players. It's a lot more fascinating to me that two All-Cut guys were involved in the same trade, and that Face-in signed two of them in the same post TC period. All told 31 GMs cut players in this span. Only devinetime and Majic of current GMs have none. A bunch of players were cut twice, but the only player to be cut three times was Mark Jackson, and all in the span of a real life month.
