Scouts have wildly divergent views on this prospect. He hasn't played a single minute of college basketball at any level, and was discovered by a professor at the USC Thornton School of Music during an amateur outdoor two on two tournament held between USC and UCLA. Jesse and teammate Kina Grannis dominated the competition and some scouts believe demonstrated NBA caliber skillsets: his sublime handle and quickness leaves defenses feeling like they're chasing ghosts, his midrange game is as unstoppable as part of the moon hurled by a pre-Crisis Superman, his defense on anyone in his sight is excellent.
Detractors point out the disturbing way his attention to team defensive comes and goes (and mostly goes), how Kina's congenial pass-first attitude made them better together, and the alarming adjustment for a "six foot two" (most scouts believe him to be 5'10" tops) limited athleticism player in the grown man sim NBA. Breaking down a journalism major in May, in snow is one thing, breaking down "Lil" Penny Hardaway on the famous parquet floor of Alexander Memorial Coliseum at McDonald's Center is quite another. Even his strengths are in some ways weaknesses. He goes to the well of midrange so often that he struggles from NBA three point range. His great promise in man defense is undermined by the way he openly ignores other defensive fundamentals, always leaking out in transition or lobbing passes off the backboard for the follow dunk rather than taking a good defensive stance or fighting for post position. Given his age and extremely delayed development, all scouts agree there's little chance it's getting better.
They say sunlight is the best disinfectant, and any GM drafting this prospect has to know they can't take it as it comes, they need a fire escape for the worst case scenario: without Kina he could be nothing alone.
They also say that what those young bloods need to understand is that this game has always been, and will always be, about buckets.
