We're back again to answer the question that's been on everyone's mind since the season began almost 3 weeks ago: Who is going to be the Regular Season Champ?
If you don't remember last year's excitement, let me hit on a couple highlights. The belt changed hands on the last day of the season when the Nuggets beat the Celtics, eliminating Dumptime's dreams of a regular season / postseason sweep and filling Nuggets fans with the hopes that maybe all was not lost.
However, the past is the past and the then is the now and the now is the later and the later is the better. So we are proud to reveal the final holder of the TMBSL Regular Season Belt for the 3033 season: The KANSAS CITY KINGS
This season saw one fewer team hold the belt than last, with 21 of 29 teams total. Amazingly, one of the teams who did not hold it this season was the owner of the best record in the league and the eventual champions, the Philadelphia 76ers. As with the Kings last year, they mostly have the schedule makers to blame. They must've pissed off Don King or something, because they were the only team in the league not to get a shot at the belt.
The surprises don't end there. We also had the best team in the West in the regular season, the Denver Nuggets, fail to hold the belt one day after finishing last season as the beltholder. Unlike the Sixers, they got two cracks at it this season, coming up short against the Celtics on day 16 and the Bucks on day 70.
Unlike last season, the Kings really had to earn their title, pulling off the second-longest streak of days and successfully defending the belt 6 times from day 111-120. The Heat had the last chance to play spoiler, but lost by 27 in Kansas City.
Here are the team and division stats for belt matches and belt defenses. The Mighty Mighty Central produces the best winning percentage as the defending beltholder, to the surprise of absolutely no one. We're pretty great.
Congrats to our Kings ownership and fans. Hopefully this takes some of the sting out of coming up just short in the playoffs. I don't care what Ankly says, you're doing purpleboard proud.
