Welcome back to another edition of the Race for the Regular Season Belt. For anyone new to the league, this article tracks who would be the regular season champ if sim league had a WWE-style title belt on the line throughout the season. For a complete explanation of the concept, here is my original article.
To recap, the first two seasons have seen the title belt go to the Denver Nuggets and Kansas City Kings. Will the belt end with a Midwestern team again? Or will another division claim the penultimate prize?
Without further ado, the final team to hold the Regular Season Championship Belt this season is: The BOSTON CELTICS
This season saw a sharp reduction in the number of belt-holding teams. After 22 and 21 teams in the first two seasons, this year we saw only 17. In what is becoming a trend, we saw one of the top teams in the league, the Houston Rockets, failed to hold the belt. Despite getting the 1 seed out west, the Rockets didn't even get a chance to play for the belt, and find themselves on the outside looking in.
Despite the fewer teams, there were not really many long streaks throughout the season. Normally I would add the longest streak to the graphic, but I couldn't fit it. The Philadelphia 76ers pulled off 8 days in a row, and few others made it 7.
The Boston Celtics pulled off a great win, taking down the Heat on the third to last day and warding off challenges from the Nuggets and Timberwolves to secure the honors. After completing the amazing feat of winning both a playoff title and regular season championship, GM Dumptime decided his team had accomplished all it could and promptly blew up his roster. Good work and congratulations.
Here are the team and divisional stats for belt matchups and belt defenses. The Atlantic continues to be the class of the league, while the Central inches closer to respectability. The West is in bad shape in general, but the Pacific division in particular put together a truly awful performance.
Congrats to the Celtics ownership, management and fans. Truly an incredible feat, and something that should help sustain them in the wilderness of his impending #dumptank. After Sim Dump nearly pulled off the title, the 4/4 performance in the layup challenge, and the regular season championship win, this truly was the Year of Dumptime.
