I agreed and suggested that the most logical time to do it would probably be whenever we decide to do the creation draft for 5.0. Here's why I think this makes sense: - One of the biggest complaints I've heard about the creation drafts is that they drag on forever since people are often not on when their pick comes up.
- We could run it similar to a fantasy football draft and have people who aren't present either dial in (maybe do a live podcast?) or online for a specific block of time. With ample time to prepare, it should be easy to set aside that time well in advance.
- With everyone either in person or online, the draft should go by very quickly and provide quicker avenues for people who want to talk trades, etc during the draft.
- the target end date for 4.0 is most likely about a year away, so we could plan this for some time in the summer or early fall and use any time in between as a break
- We have plenty of time to discuss which location makes the most sense, and any other arrangements we want to make (like renting out a hotel conference room, private room at a bar, or any extracurricular stuff)
- Can't think of a better excuse to share tacotinis and talk sim than a live draft
The biggest thing that we should do is pick a date as soon as possible and commit to it. This gives us the best chance to ensure something like this would happen, and if people block it off on calendars and start planning for it now, then it should lessen the risk of real life getting in the way. As far as location, we figured we could either try to select a place most centrally located, a place w/ a lot of GMs nearby, and/or a place that is near a main hub where flights would theoretically be fairly cheap. I'm not optimistic enough to believe that we can get everyone there, but I think if we did this right and got a group of at least 10-15, it would be a great way to kick off 5.0. Thoughts?

I'd like to attend. Depends on time of the year entirely... and ability to convince the missus. At worst I'd phone in for the entirety of the draft.

i like the sound of this
i want to bring up again that the new software allows for expansion and contraction. we know we won't be able to get everyone to this, either in person or otherwise, so we could easily start 5.0 with 20 (or whatever) and expand from there as people become available. that's if we go to the new software, obviously.

Big fan of this idea. May is pretty bad for me. I'd go with August if we can.
I think the first thing we need to decide is whether want to go spend more to be in a city or try to be cheap and stay in a smaller venue.
Second - do we want to get our own hotel rooms or a house?

To me, the downside of a house is shared liability. So I guess I'm going to veto that if Buster comes and he is not bonded.

Yeah, this was a problem when I did Air bnb with friends at Coachella last year. Some of them were acting stupid and got us kicked out, and then didn't do anything to help the guy who put the money down for the place after he lost the rental deposit. Also his Air bnb rating is now trashola.

This would be cool, however my fear of flying and unwillingness (just being honest) to fly for this would limit my participation to the midwest most likely. I would however like a reserved spot for 5.0

My thoughts on potential locations:
-Vegas is a natural fit and would be reasonable for people to get to, especially the few that we have on the west coast. There's tons of stuff to do there and gives enough different options that we could do things as a group or segment into smaller groups for those who may only want to gamble or those who plan on spending the whole time plastered. One of the downsides is that things could potentially get pricey and there's no one really close, so everyone would have to fly, which might lessen the potential participants.
-Dallas is a central location for our Texas GMs (if Soup comes back that's potentially 5 people) and is a major hub for American Airlines, so those flying could probably get cheap flights. We could probably find some good deals depending on where we booked a hotel or house. We did our staff retreat there for work last year and they had some great group rates.
-Chicago is another centrally located airport hub city and is driveable for a lot of the guys in the midwest. Not sure what kind of deals there are but with Ankly on the ground leading the negotiations I'm sure we could find something good.
-Omaha. What better way to thank our commish than by hosting our draft in his backyard. There are a few GMs that would be within driving range, but I expect flights would be a little pricier. Still, the hotels and other kinds of costs would probably be less than anywhere else.
-DC is a good spot should we decide to do east coast. We've got 4 GMs in the area and eric is only a short train ride away. However, group rates in DC are a bit higher than most other places because there is always some association or another that decides to host their "Lobby the hill" week any random week of the year. It's also a bit tougher of an ask of our west coast representatives.

This is a good idea, however one issue is that we don't know when 4.0 will end. Are you advocating for just doing this draft and then potentially waiting months before the league would begin? Would be difficult to keep everyone's attention, especially those who aren't currently participating in 4.0

Would be difficult to keep everyone's attention, especially those who aren't currently participating in 4.0 I think we should do the opposite. We can ball-park about how long 4.0 might last, and set a date a few months after that for wiggle room. If 4.0 ends earlier than expected, then we can use that time as a break and to do any legwork that 5.0 set-up might take. If it somehow drags to the draft date anyway, then we can go ahead and draft 5.0, since there's probably only a season or two left in whoever the straggler is that's keeping the league alive. It would suck for the time in between if we ended up with a few months off, but maybe we could run a mini-league using the new software and/or wheel in that spare time to make sure people are happy w/ how it works (should we choose to use it).

For the concerns about liability, are we worried that a bunch of sim basketball nerds are gonna get too wild? I'm not too worried about that TBH. Although, soup did leave me a pretty drunken voicemail//
