preseason and summer league. 1. Omar Little The scoring will regress due to Outside alone, and it's pretty unlikely a B Inside guy is gonna shoot 53% from the field, but the scoring should still be at worst very good. Great defensive stats. Handling and rebounding need work, and unlike most PG prospects Omar's age and potential give him Little chance to sew up the handles via TC alone. Will be 36 when he comes off his first max and so is a threat to retire. . 2. Avon Barksdale Similar story here. His predicted Outside regression is smaller but ain't nobody shooting 57% from the field, plus he was a little weaker in summer league. His rebounding and handling are a notch better and of course he's only 21, so he has a higher ceiling than Omar regardless. Whether he's a better prospect overall will be determined when we have a better idea how good he is right now. . 3. Karim ShabazzThis year's Dean Cain if White Superman was six inches taller. Put up a comical 17.5 rebounds per 36 in summer league. Not bad. It's a weak looking class so far but I still expect him to finish top five. Karim Shabazz - 1 yr, $1m, 0% . 4. Elton TylerNow we get into some kookier prospects. E-Tyl played SF in preseason so his rebounding is actually okay, but even taking that into account his shot blocking is poor. Going 100 of 104 from the free throw line is pretty good though. Pretty d@rn good. He'll always be an elite scorer full stop, if he can get some Garnett training camps to shore up that shot blocking he'll be the best big in the league, and then Herb will probably get him in a trade for a third rounder and a washing machine. #veto . 5. Eric ChenowithChenowith doesn't have the same ceiling but with being around three blocks per 36 gives him a much, much, much higher floor. Reminds me of peak Stephon Templeton and he's only 22. You gotta hand it to Yawn. A lot of people would have stopped drafting bigs after Wynward, Lane, Gooden, Meyer, Olowokandi, but Yawn never gave up. h/t . 6. Byron Mouton I wouldn't be surprised if none of these guys are on the ladder come day 30. Lord Byron "Prince Luc Richard Mbah a" Mouton was okay scoring in summer league, gives you good rebounds, and didn't completely fall apart in the regular season. It's slim pickings. . 7. Marlo Stanfield Marlo was literally the best efficiency in summer league and literally the worst for a backcourt player in the preseason. We've got a wide range here, so we'll throw him on for now. . 8. Tyrus Boswell Was slightly more efficient than Marlo in preseason, but was still almost .1 xpts/tsa below average for a big man, and shoots too much to ignore that. Still, he too was a fantastic scorer in summer league. My bet is a Tristan Thompson type, and there are worse things to be. . 9. Slim CharlesSlim's got better efficiency and lower volume than Tyrus. Needs work on blocks and boards but should grow into a solid d/r guy. . 10. Ron KellyHe's got tiny scoring volume and solid rebounding. He's also terrible, because he needs +16 and a miracle just to get his shot blocking to reasonable levels, but like I always say, leg 'em down and smack 'em yack 'em. And you can't teach not shooting. So there's a chance.

I think Eric uses Summer League data to supplement preseason info but won't rank someone without preseason PT unless there's a complete lack of options.

But then just make the rookie ladder based on preseason and don't factor in summer league.

What makes you move someone up or down other than that you think they are actually more legit?

Since there is dramatically more information available later in the season than before it, it makes no sense to want to have the first ladder look like the last.

day 60. 1. Omar Little - LR #1Jesse Epstein 2.0. . 2. Avon Barksdale - LR #2Aside from Omar there's a pretty thick class of good rookies this year, especially on the perimeter where we have six people putting up above average scoring with good defensive numbers. I'm going with Avon as the top for now because he's a PG and because he had by far the best preseason. His low scoring volume also suggests he can take Inside Scoring camps, which suggests his efficiency should grow more than most. . 3. Slim Charles- LR #9For once we have a big who's blocking more in the real season, which combined with his perimeter average scoring efficiency makes Slim a very tantalizing prospect. Reasonable growth in blocking and rebounding should put him at elite d/r levels, a Jump Shot camp puts him at plus efficiency even for a perimeter player, and then he'll waste away on a middling team while people complain that every contender looks the same just like Sim Soup and Dirk before him. . 4. Snoop Pearson - LR unrankedAnother perimeter player. Snoop was really bad before the season so probably won't be up for long. Has an intriguing ast:tov ratio but with C- Handling grade PG eligibility is a pipe dream. . 5. Karim Shabazz- LR #3Karim is already an elite d/r man. Microscoping scoring volume, great blocks and boards for a rookie. With such bad scoring efficiency the hope is he offers to resign for peanuts every year. . 6. Archie Miller - LR unrankedEfficiency is a little lower than the other perimeter people, especially concerning given how high his volume already is, but he's a PG so I bumped him up a couple slots. Love the blocks. Boards are another area of concern, like with Avon. . 7. Britton Johnson - LR unrankedAfter a disastrous summer league Britton gave you a decent preseason and has carried that momentum forward into the real year. As a pure SF he's SG eligible which is probably his long term position, but it also leaves the wing supersub option on the table. 49% from the field for a B- Inside guy seems tough to sustain, we'll see how he does. . 8. Estaban Weaver - LR unrankedIf we played sixteen games a year this guy would be this year's MVP, but this ain't the NFL, so for now he'll have to settle for this year's Alredick Hughes. . 9. Eric Chenowith- LR #5Best block and rebound numbers in the class but shoots just a little too much and too inefficiently to be a pure d/r guy, reneging on the promise of preseason like so many bigs before him. Puts his GM in a dangerous spot because investing in his scoring might be enough to get him to league average efficiency for a big, or he might actually be even worse than he looks and it just makes him take even more sub optimal shots. . 10. Myron Random - LR unrankedThe best d/r package of the perimeter people, but his scoring is even more tenuous than Snoop's. Still, with an estimated 94 Jump Shot and 32 Three Point Shot he has a very high ceiling.
